Success Stories
Florida Yards & Neighborhoods
Video Transcript
Bob Vila: "So we're real happy that the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods program is part of our story.
"I think the idea of educating people about what native plants are and which plants do what and which ones require less water and which ones attract wildlife and birds, et cetera--all of these different components are really important to promote to help them understand.
"The single most important thing it can do is help them save money on their water bills, 'cause when you're planting responsibly, you don't need to irrigate as much. You also will be learning about irrigation systems which are state of the art and help to conserve. A lot of the water bills people see are pretty humongous these days.
"When I was there in the '60s, the Extension programs ... and there was a lot of research already being done in the area ... not so specifically about landscape and hurricanes but in the whole area of our ecology and our wonderful gardens and trees. So I'm just so proud that it's still going on."
